The App Sumo Rabbit Hole
When you discover you have more software than you could possibly ever use
When you’re as impulsive and as focused on saving money as I am, then App Sumo, the platform for new software at bargain basement prices, is irresistible. If you’re into maximising your productivity, even more so, as much of the software on offer is not only about saving you money, but also time.
However, as I’m currently creating a spreadsheet detailing what I’ve purchased over the years, I know that for every worthwhile purchase, there is also one that turned out to be a genuine dud, or costing me far more than I had anticipated.
If you’re planning on buying products from App Sumo, here’s what you should be on the lookout for and what you should avoid:
Hidden license or subscription fees
Does the software grant you unlimited use, forever, or does it have an expiry date? Uteach, for example, a course creator software, recently decided to withdraw its unlimited courses offer, and now my App Sumo deal is limited to three courses. The weird and wacky
Some weird and wacky software can be fun—such as the video signature software I use, Warm Welcome. Others, however, can be a waste of time and too quirky to actually be useful.Beware buying the same product multiple times
In reviewing all my purchases and seeing how various software has evolved, I’ve noticed I’ve bought multiple products that schedule social media. They all perform very similar functions, feature the use of AI, and I certainly don’t need three schedulers!Check for ongoing updates and support
Many App Sumo deals come from new startups. While some grow into reliable tools with robust support, others fail to deliver updates or disappear entirely. Make sure the software has an active development team and a clear roadmap.Consider integration with existing tools
Does the software integrate with tools you already use? A great deal can lose its value if it doesn’t play well with your current workflow or requires significant manual effort to use alongside other programs.Evaluate scalability
Will the software meet your needs as your business grows? Some tools may seem perfect for a small operation but fail to scale when you need more advanced features or higher performance.Watch out for overlapping functionalities
Similar to buying multiple social media schedulers, it’s easy to buy tools with overlapping features—like project management software. Before purchasing, take stock of what you already own and ensure the new tool offers unique value.Trial the product before buying
Many App Sumo deals come with a trial period or a refund guarantee. Take advantage of this to test the software’s usability and compatibility with your needs before committing.Check user reviews and community feedback
App Sumo has an active user community. Read reviews and join discussions to get a sense of how other users feel about the product. It’s a great way to uncover red flags or hidden gems.Understand the refund policy
App Sumo allows refunds for many products within a certain period. Make sure you’re aware of the terms so you can get your money back if the software doesn’t meet your expectations.
