Keeping Receipts
Where do you keep your receipts? In a shoebox? On an app? Scattered in a drawer? Do you throw them away?
It’s amazing how the small items you purchase for your business can accumulate into a decent amount you can claim against your taxes once you get in the habit of doing it.
The HMRC website says, “There are no rules on keeping records. You can keep them on paper, digitally or as part of a software program (like book-keeping software).
HMRC can charge you a penalty if your records are not accurate, complete and readable.”
There are many ways to keep receipts, but the easiest one I’ve found is 1tap receipts. This app allows you to photograph your receipt and then file it under the appropriate category, meaning you have a record of what you have spent without needing to keep the paper version.
If you use Xero for your accounting, you can use the Xero App, which has a similar feature to 1Tap but is one step better: It will automatically file the receipt and integrate it into your other business costs. Xero is currently offering 90% off its 6-month plan if you purchase it before 30 September. Click here for more details.
Alternatively, your bank may already offer a receipt scanner like the one on the Tide App. The bank also provides an expense card, which is another way to keep track of your receipts without worrying about paper. You can find more information on this here.
Finally, if you do decide to go down the paper route, you will still need to itemise your receipts for your self-assessment and keep them so they can be reviewed if HMRC decides to do a spot-check audit.
If you’re seeking to reduce your tax liability, it makes sense to keep track of your receipts. It’s much easier to track your spending as it happens than wait until the end of the year to scurry around trying to locate your invoices. Let us know if you’ve found an easy way to track your spending, as we’re always keen to hear about time-saving software.
You can find comprehensive information about what you can and cannot claim as self-employed here.
Until next time,
Suzanne & Mark
